Our BPI Taytay-Bayan Branch

It's that time of the month when I have to pay my dues. That August 13, 2010 day, was for BPI Bank.

It was about high noon, around 12:15 or so. I went there as I do on a regular basis. Already, there was a line of 5 to 6 people. Immediately, I could understand that the bank may have only one teller to assist all of us since the others are probably on lunch and they were just taking turns. I also noticed that there was another client on the side doing business that can't be done over the counter.

So there we were, waiting on line like good modest people. First thing that caught my attention was the man in front of me... he smells like a "real hard-working pinoy" (if you know what I mean). But that was just fine until I noticed the next thing. There was now a man behind me on the line, he was probably tired and since he was near the sofa on the lounge, he sat while waiting. And as a side note from the focus topic, I just have to say: this man has no manners. While sitting down, he lifted his sweaty dirty shirt to expose his over-sized belly. Like he was sitting at his own house! Come on! I mean, just to provide additional impact on the topic - There I was, just barely 2 mins waiting on line, and already there are to things that irritated me. The smell in front and the image of the man behind me. I'll take the smell for the meantime thank you.

And on some occasion like this, the line was so slow. I had turned my Ipod on for distraction, 10 more minutes and I'm still 4 people from the counter! I was staring at the lone teller, and I was thinking "ok, just a little more patience, she's not new, just slow". And most of the time I can see her calling her manager (probably) for assistance. So first of, I know she wasn't new (I've seen her for months), then second, she still commits a lot of mistakes. Why put her alone on the counter with 7 (and growing...) number of people on the line, on a lunch time of a pay-day?! On a day that obviously, a lot of people will want to make a week's payment deadline! To make it short, people are in a hurry to meet the bank's 1pm or 2pm cut-off. And they leave a slow-poke on the counter!? And that was just the situation for 20 mins. The aggravating part was yet to come.

25 mins into waiting, I'm still the fifth person on line. I was already playing some games with my iPod at the time, so I can keep myself occupied. Then came this dressed up woman with a "kikay bag" (sorry ladies for the lack of a better term). By the way she's dressed, you can tell she's there for business. She walked straight to the counter, and took a large sum of money from her bag. Without looking back at line which has been there for over 20 mins! While the slow-teller & the guards didn't even bother to remind the lady. I looked at the guard and he just winced at me as if he's saying, "Sir kanina pa yan eh, bumalik lang, pasensya na". So then I'm thinking, "ok, baka may ipapasa lang". So then I went back to my game... and 10 minutes later (I know, because I kept looking at their clock) the lady who stormed in is still not finished! Through the sound from my earphones I can already hear the other people, specially the fat guy behind me complaining. There was also another line behind the lady forming. NO ONE FROM THE BPI EMPLOYEES RESPONDED! If that was a big transaction, it should have been handled by another teller! Or better, the manager who was constantly walking behind the slow-teller should have owned the transaction so we can get the line moving! But the only person who responded was the slow-teller, whose heroic response was just look at us... and then back to the lady in front of her. Talk about insensitive moves! So I'm still the fifth person on the line, with then 5 more behind me after 3 people walked out, we're still waiting for her to finish!

I had no choice, it was almost 1:05pm. I have to make a payment deadline. So then finally, she finished, let's not forget the 4 people in front of me. At 1:20 I got my chance. All I had to do, was make a P1,000 payment and it took me more than an hour! Just because of a slow teller and a lady who didn't even consider the other hardworking people in the room, waiting on line. And just for the record, she never looked at us, even as she walked out. What a bitch! And the teller, who didn't even take us into consideration, your that bitch's bitch, you and your manager. I don't have a term for it, but you're both worse than her.

What's my point? Aside from being upset about waiting on the line for about an hour or so, is that there are still people, like the lady bitch who are very inconsiderate and think of themselves as more important than others. And the "slow-teller bitch of the bitch" had the nerve to chit-chat and read a news article with the lady bitch while 10 people are waiting!

Bottom line, this again, reflects on how old fashioned Filipinos handle their business. We choose who we serve first & how. Well I say don't!. Choose who you serve on grounds of whether they deserve it or not (like our society's self declared poor people). Not with how they look or with what they bring. Inside that bank, we are all doing business with them, P1000 or P100,000... we are there for the same thing. To make their business grow. Not just to make them look good.

Sadly, we all carry this trait. I would admit to being prejudice in my own way. But with the lesson I realized yesterday. I will have to re-evaluate myself. Because not only does it show impact with my behavior, it also reflects on my work ethics. I'll also make sure, that my children will not be identified in the same way.
